What is Vamana Therapy?

Ayurveda, an old Indian powerful medical system that provide huge numbers of therapies and treatments. All of them having their special effect and curing power. Vamana Therapy is one of them, which involves controlled therapeutic vomiting to remove toxins from the body. Vamana is Sanskrit word which means “emesis”. It is an important part of Panchakarma therapy which aims to eliminate the excessive doshas from the body. It targets the kapha dosha from the body. It gives brilliant results after successful completion of the process. Many patients start observing the effects from day 1 of completion. Principles of Vamana Therapy:

In accordance with Ayurveda, an imbalance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) forms any kind of diseases. The excess Kapha dosha, which is linked to the body’s congestion, mucous, and poisons, is the primary target of Vamana therapy. Vamana therapy works to eliminate these toxins that have collected in the body and bring equilibrium back by triggering vomiting.

Action / Mode of action / Physiology of Panchakarma:

        Panchakarma removes all toxicity of the body. The Movement of dosha (toxic) from shakha (from complete body) to koshtha (middle part of body/ nearby stomach part or stomach), by which toxic can be removed from body. The Purvakarma (per procedure) helps to move the toxic to Koshtha. It is used to eradicate Dosha from the human being. To make this process easier, the Dosha was pushed towards the kostha. 

The doshas leave the shakha (extremities or peripheral regions) and come to koshtha (alimentary tract) due to aggravation, liquefaction, suppuration, clearing of the obstacle at the opening of the channels, or pacification of vata.

1. Purva Karma (Preparatory Phase): Purva Karma involves internal oleation (abhyantar snehana i.e. consumption of medicated ghee for 3 to 6 days according to patient’s body response) and external oleation (bahya snehana i.e. application of Oil on body for 3 to 6 days according to patient’s body response). External oleation is totally depends on internal oleation. Internal oleation entails the consumption of medicated ghee, which lubricates the body tissues and facilitates toxin elimination. External oleation involves oil massages to loosen toxins and improve circulation.

2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure): The main procedure of Vamana therapy starts after the preparatory phase i.e. after 3 to 6 days of ghreet pan and external oleation. The patient is given herbal decoction to drink, followed by specific movements, massage, or induced vomiting. Emesis is triggered by the administration of emetic herbs like ‘madanaphala’ powder. Emesis is continued till the pitta comes out. Once the pitta started to come out at that time you should stop the Vamana process.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure Phase): After the therapeutic vomiting, the patient’s diet is gradually restored to normal. Light, easily digestible foods are recommended, along with specific herbal medications to aid in the recovery process.

Precautions and Considerations:

For vamana therapy to be safe and successful, it must be administered by qualified Ayurvedic professionals. Although typically safe, there are a few warnings and restrictions to take into account. Vamana treatment should be avoided in pregnant women, children, the elderly, and anyone with compromised immune systems. Aside from those with serious cardiac ailments, respiratory problems, or mental health issues, this therapy should be avoided by everyone else.

1. It should only be performed under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

2. The therapy is not suitable for pregnant women, children, elderly individuals, and those with certain medical conditions.

3. A thorough assessment of the patient’s health, doshic imbalance, and suitability for the treatment must be conducted beforehand.

4. Following the treatment, a post-therapy regimen involving specific dietary and lifestyle modifications is crucial for optimal results.

Key Points to Remember:

1. In purva karma, food intake of patient must be observe properly i.e. Take note of gap between internal ghreet pan and meal to be taken by the patient. The timing and quantity of ghruta must be in increasing manner.

2. Patient should avoid extra travelling and exertion in vamana.

3. Patient should take extra care of their diet, junk and oily food is strictly prohibited before start and after the completion of therapy.
